2 KINDS OF FIESTAS!!

CUENCA is definitely a party kind of town.....both private and public parties are very popular and well attended...

On May 30 our next door neighbor Eduardo Cabrera celebrated his 56th Birthday and inaugurated his newly finished house....

The festivities started with a Mass and house blessing.....

The priest was a warm, lovable person who really showed his love for God and the Mass,  the Eucharist......

When the young musician forgot how one of the hymns went, the priest just took the guitar and played and sang that part....really neat!!

Everyone gathered in the family room where Eduardo had set up a table to be used as the altar.....when the Mass ended the priest took Holy Water and went from room to room over all the house sprinkling and praying ----  they'll be no demons in this house!!!

After Mass the party began....

Our host Eduardo sitting by the patio fountain....

Everyone loves to take pictures.......

A wonderful dinner......

 Great conversations.....

Room for EVERYBODY!!
The beautiful living room.....

Cozy TV room.....

The well stocked bar.....

Big beautiful white kitchen.....                                    and a formal dining room....

THE HOUSE ALSO HAS 4 BEDROOMS,  3 FULL BATHS,  AND 2 "GUEST BATHS".....
And then the dancing began......

And they danced.......

Until 3:30 am...........

And I watched........

So happy to be part of this wonderful Cuencano family....

One of the biggest celebrations in Cuenca is the 7 day long feast of Corpus Christi......

                             The Church was magnificant..........

The screen announces the coming of the relic of St. John Paul II from the 17 to the 20 of July,  a drop of his blood relic.....

The feast of Corpus Christi is known for all the sweets ..... in commemoration of the "Sweet body of Christ" .....

One of the vendors outside the Church....
Religious goods sold every Sunday from several booths.....

The crowds are huge and gather every day for 7 days -- some of the booths stay longer...

Lunch at Don Colon where we met our neighbors....since we introduced them to this restaurant it has become a favorite Almuerzo place for them,  as well as us....on Sunday after Mass...

Saturday was Don Colon's birthday   ----  this from the party---

And now back to the normal life here......

The ceiling in the dining room has been leaking from my bathroom for months......the plumber has torn up the tile and toilet and put in new pipes, three times,  but the drips continued.....

I insisted that Jaime  (our landlord)  call Rene Calle to come investigate the problem and he determined that the water is coming from the shower.....they are now trying to decide the best way to solve the problem  -  perhaps putting in a big tub....

Rene (in blue) is a Cuencano who worked in the states for 30 years and KNOWS construction,  the American way....he builds and repairs homes here now.....0997731068  if you want good work done or a beautiful new house built!!!   And of course he speaks perfect English...

This is what the ceiling looks like now....it's an ugly mess....I'll be anxious to get it taken care of before Deborah and Cristina arrive the first week in July.....

EL MERCADO RESTAURANT y mas!

Yesterday we decided to try a different restaurant before we went to SuperMaxi for groceries.....I had heard good things about "El Mercado"  (from the Vintimilla family who also owns El Jardin and Villa Rosa among others..)

Called Patricio and he took us to Calle Larga 8-27 and Benigno Malo,  an old historic building built on the river...
The bar area on the entry level...Has a floor I just love
with tiny blue accent tiles...
We sat upstairs at a corner table by the window...notice the little tin pitcher with flowers...
The charming stairway down....

Two dining areas on two levels....

Simple food done RIGHT!!
The check is presented in a "Book Box"

Ricardo by the Shabby Chic bureau

Another unusual feature.....YOU CAN SHOP!

As you enter the building you see a couple of neat shops......

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
MASS at the Cathedral on Sunday was especially packed because of the pilgrimage of the Virgin de Cisne procession...... I couldn't see much except the beautiful faces of the people around me....

The face of an angel......and the lovely lady in purple lace.....

MONDAY......DELEG with the wonderful Cabrera Urgiles family:

From the top......Ricardo pigging out on Guacamole I made  :)
Julia and Maria who work for the family.....
Susana Cabrera and her father Rogerio,  "THE CHIEF"
Making Humitas in the outdoor kitchen at Quinta Esthelita.....
Ricardo with Dominica Cristina  "Titi" and her little friend Joaquina...

                                                             ########

Other highlights of the past 2 weeks include lunch with dear friends John and Joyula and Jean....

John has been suffering some health challenges but now he's doing great thanks to some alternative doctor here....

Mosquita and Fanny came over with sandwiches de Pernil --- small roast pig sandwiches we love so much.....

So great having them come for a visit.....Mosquita really likes my new bright pink tablet!!

Went to see the Cardiologist and am much better after he changed my medications....met this lovely indiginous woman at the IESS pharmacy....
She had such a big bag of medications -- I started chatting with her and found out she is very crippled up with arthritis -- her hands....God bless her,  she so reminded me of my mother who had the same condition....
For me it is such a pleasure to talk to the people and be accepted as one of them.....

MASS in the hospital waiting area....God bless this wonderful country and the wonderful people who honor Him so.....

That's all for now, folks!!
